The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is one of the requirements needed to graduate from your learner's permit to your P1 provisional licence. If you have a P1 licence issued before 28 July 2014 you may need to pass the HPT to progress from P1 to P2 - check the rules. Exemptions If you live more than 100 kilometres (as the crow flies) from a place where the test is conducted, or on Kangaroo Island, you are exempt from having to pass the HPT.
Booking a HPT You can take the hazard perception test at a, but you must make an appointment first. Telephone 13 10 84 to make an appointment. If you fail, you can re-sit the test immediately provided a vacancy is available. A fee will be charged each time you attempt the test. You may need to get more on-road practise before attempting the test again.
Don't be in a hurry, make sure you are ready before trying again. Language options You can take the test in English, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Croatian, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish or Vietnamese. You'll need an interpreter for other languages. Telephone 13 10 84 or visit a Service SA customer service centre for assistance. About the HPT The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based test that measures your ability to recognise and respond to potentially dangerous situations and react appropriately. A lack of these skills is a major factor in crashes involving young novice drivers. You do not need computer skills to take the test.
All interaction with the HPT computer is via the touch screen. You may not be assisted during the HPT. All instances of cheating or attempts to cheat will be treated seriously. The computer will take you through an introductory section that explains the test, following by instructions. You will be given two questions to practise before the actual test starts to help you become familiar with how the test will operate. The actual test involves showing film clips of real traffic situations that you will be asked to respond to. You will see what the driver would see.
The dashboard shows you the speed at which you are travelling and if the indicators are operating. You are told what the driver wants to do (e.g. Turn or go straight ahead). You will need to touch the screen if and when you think an action is required such as slowing down, overtaking or crossing an intersection. The picture will flash indicating that the computer has recorded your response. The film clip may run for another few seconds, but once you have seen the flash there is no need to touch the screen again.
You may be shown a situation where it would be unsafe to take an action such as turning or overtaking. If you think it would be unsafe to take any action you should not touch the screen. When all the questions have been completed, a screen will appear to tell you that you have finished, and to notify your test supervisor. Please read this section for a complete guide to driving risks and hazards. Team PineappleStudio. Lenerdburger, Good but needs minor adjustments I like the app and the way it is easy to use and straightforward. It’s a good way to practice for the HPT.
However, I think the response timeframe isn’t fully accurate. If you do the practice tests on the South Australian driving website, you don’t get penalised for responding early. In this app however, if you respond too early you get told that your reaction was too late. People who have done the test in real life say that you should respond within plenty of time, but in the app it feels like the timeframe you have to respond is either too short or too late that if done in the real test you might get penalised.
There’s really nothing wrong with responding earlier either, because slowing down lets your brain process information faster and easier. So to say that “you must respond within this time window” seems a bit wrong.
The whole HPT handbook is about leaving plenty of room, which you can only do by slowing down sooner rather than later. So I guess what I’m trying to say overall is that the real life test will probably be a bit more lenient with responses that come earlier, whereas this app has such a short time window for responses at times that it just feels more annoying than helpful because you spend more time trying to get your response to line up in a 0.5 sec window rather than learning the limits of what is too early or too late. Developer Response, Hi! Thank you for this rich feedback! We will take note of what you mentioned and will provide you an update shortly to make the experience even better and closer to the test.

GolAwesome🐕, (Edited) Thankyou for this app! I tap exactly where it was and even though the review tells you it’s in that exact spot on the bar, it still says I either missed it or I’m too early, I’m really stressing out rightnow and this app is the only thing that can help for tomorrow’s HPT test. And according to the real test you don’t have to click when overtaking or turning which is annoying as heck. But other than that it’s a pretty good app and showing you what it is in the actual test.
Thank you for reading. EDIT: If you don’t click on anything it will tell you if you clicked on it or not, but if you tap no, the app crashes. ————————————————— FINAL EDIT: Thankyou so much for the response, I passed the test thanks to this app. I guess the ‘not being accurate’ part of my review was wrong after all. And yeah overtake and turn right scenes you don’t have to touch anything. Thanks so much!

Eazcaa, It’s not right This app is not right all the times are late and if you were to do this on the actual test you will fail. I paid the money for the full version and it was such a waste most of the times are wrong and there is one where it tells you not to click when you should click. There is a free hazard perception test app which actually works and gives feedback on why you should be stopping at specific times.
If I were to have just gone off this app I would have failed. Developer Response, Hi, We have rebuilt the app, please download the latest version. All the best, Pineapple Studio.
