November Staff Spotlight First grade is a magical time when students discover that they can be readers, writers, mathematicians, and thinkers, and where better to spend that year than in the classroom of Tanya Carey, our staff spotlight for the month of November. Carey teaches first grade at Garret Schenck Elementary School, where she makes magic happen every day in the lives of her young learners. Carey started her teaching career as a math teacher at Valley High School in Bingham and came to RSU #74 as a Special Education teacher at Solon Elementary School in 1998. She moved into a grades 7-8 teaching position at Embden Elementary School the next year.

After working as a Migrant Education teacher in Skowhegan for four years, she returned to the district as a Title I ed tech III back at Solon Elementary School for five years before taking the first grade teaching job at Garret Schenck in 2012. Her students are Mrs. Carey's top priority, and her Special Ed, Migrant, and Title I experiences and training have equipped her well to be able to differentiate her instruction to meet the varying needs of all learners. She works effectively with other staff members to seek services and resources that will help her students to overcome obstacles to their learning.

Her students consistently meet or exceed academic growth targets on their assessments. Carey is a Wonder Woman when it comes to classroom management. Her classroom is very structured with firm and consistent expectations but is also a very warm and supportive learning environment with lots of positive reinforcement when students meet her expectations. She utilizes a multitude of different approaches and strategies to help students learn to successfully regulate their behavior. She is a great motivator of students. In addition to being a phenomenal teacher, Mrs.

Carey plays an active role in the life of her school and district. She is the Teacher Mentor for RSU #74, working with new teachers to ensure that they get a positive start in their first few years in the teaching field, as well as a member of the district's Math Think Tank. At Garret Schenck, Mrs. Carey serves on the school leadership team and is a wellness champion for the district's Move More Kids Program. She organized and oversees the 100 Mile Club, plans activities for all of the students to promote good health and wellness, and is a great role model for students in her choice of activities in her personal life such as healthy eating, running, mountain climbing and hiking. Popular with and well-respected by students, staff, and parents, Mrs. Carey is an amazing teacher and advocate for students.

Her teaching talents, dedication to children, strong interpersonal skills, and work ethic make her an ideal choice for this month's Staff Spotlight.
